Security camera for home use

My brother called me after he visited Fry's in Seattle. He said that Lorex was top of the line for home security cameras per a sales person he spoke to at Fry's. This was a fantastic price from Amazon and the shipping was free. My son installed it over the course of a week (planning where to place the cameras, etc.) and this system is great. The clarity is amazing both day and night. It's easy to operate for playback and we haven't had any problems at all. Hopefully if anyone comes on our property again, we can get a good pic to give to the police!

Great images, easy to set up, but one important note....

When I got the box, I was immediately impressed with the packaging, but I thought it was just too small to have everything. I was wrong. Each camera comes with its own 60 feet of cable, which was plenty for me. The first thing I did was read the manual, and it recommended checking each camera before putting it up, which is a very smart thing to do, because you don't want to find out something is wrong with a camera AFTER you wire it all and install it. With that said, I will tell you that hooking up the cameras were easy. The only thing I didn't like was a little play/slack in positioning the camera angle. Be ready to drill a lot of holes and repair them (caulk, etc.). This is a good time to note that Lorex sells wireless cameras, and would be probably be much easier to set up (certainly easier to install), and more difficult to disable (no worries about someone cutting a cable). So, how does it look? The images are great. Nothing like I had expected....sharp and crisp, even at night. Even with a bit of distance. The cameras are indoor/outdoor, so I have set them up around my house, inside and out. This really requires a bit of physical work, and running the wires was a pain, but no different than running any other kind of wire. This was the most time consuming for me, especially because I moved my router into my entertainment center and placed the DVR inside as well. The only problem with that is that the remote must have a very narrow path, because if I do not point it directly at it, nothing happens, so I wish it was a little stronger. I also am curious to see how it works when there are strong temperature changes, as well as how easily dew will form and how it will effect the images. It's great to see who is at my doors (front and side) as well as being able to monitor my backdoor and basement door as well as my driveway and front steps. I didn't have any problems, but my brother (who is a "computer guy") set everything up to my router, etc. I don't know that I would have been able to do that part of it myself....at least not easily.

Because of the wiring, etc., I think this system is better suited for an office setting, or for someone who is comfortable with DYI projects in the home. I think the wireless cameras would be best for the home.

For the price that Amazon is offering these at, I think there is a lot of value here. These are not cheap or flimsy components, angling of the cameras not withstanding. My local "wholesale" club offers a lorex with 4 cameras, so if you would like to see it in action, try your local one and see it there first then order this one.

Excellent value and outstanding performance

"I purchased the Lorex LH400 DVR for my language school in NYC. We wanted to be sure there was always video of the classes in case there is ever any accusation of improper teacher behavior. The system came with 8 cameras and it has been operating flawlessly for a couple of months now. I hooked up an external drive to the USB port and running backups is easy. We did have one power adapter go bad, and Lorex replaced it with no problems. Customer service was very good. It is also great to use the Lorex Client to monitor the school from my home or on the road. In fact, it might be a nice future feature to provide secured access to view only at certain times for certain cameras so we could let parents check in on their children while in class! I highly recommend this unit!"

Works great.. Has been installed for over a year

We installed the Lorex over a year ago and it has worked great. The DDNS feature is nice. You can watch your security cameras via the web. I had two problems... 1) Internet Explorer 9 requires you to goto menu bar > tools > compatibility mode in order to login, ie you get the "login failed" try changing IE9 to "compatibility mode." The fan bearing went out and gave off a horrible noise for days. I replaced the fan, $9 and we are running quietly again.

Highly recommend the unit.. Particularly for the price on Amazon and Sams Club.

Convenience and peace of mind is priceless!

We installed this Lorex video security system that we got from Amazon into our friends' business' new commercial real estate space 6 months ago, when it was being renovated. This system was one of the few items during that construction that was hassle free and worked perfectly. The installation of the 8 cameras was easy, as the system came with proper mounts, lots of cabling, and we only needed to pick up two BNC extension cords (also purchased from Amazon) for the farthest camera runs at the back of our warehouse. Other than plugging in the power cord, a monitor, an internet connection, and 2 minutes with their set-up wizard, that was it. As plug-and-play as it gets.

The video works excellent, day or night - there is a ring of Infrared LEDs on the cameras and you get that military style "night vision" green video when the lights are off. Still very clear and you can see dust, low light sources, and the IR light reflecting off a person's eyeballs. The DVR records all 8 video channels 24/7, which we can stream from within our local network, but the best part is the instant mobile viewing.

With the MEye app (and a secure login) we can stream any of the 8 video channels from anywhere in thwe world, using an iPhone or iPad (also apps for Blackberry and Windows phones). We tried the app that Lorex markets (LOREX Live) but had better results with MEye. We can be on the other side of the world, whip out our phones, start the sync, and view footage from any of the 8 cameras. Neat! If there is ever an alarm (which calls their phone) they can take a look and see if there is an actual intruder or if it's one of the employees who just mistyped the alarm disarm code. We can make sure they aren't slacking when we're gone - Big Brother is watching, hehe.

Very happy with the Lorex system after 6 months of use, it is a great product, and deserves a 5 star rating.

Good choice for many applications

I purchased this item directly from Lorex via their "Open Box" program. Arrived as most of their open box sales, just like a new unopened, unused product. Takes a little bit of getting used to all the various features and functions, which vary from model to model, but did an excellent job for the person I put it in for. They don't use the iPhone features but I set it up so I could check it out and was really impressed. Resolution of the camera and recording is not the best for all applications, but for most the 420 line cameras are adequate. Its all a matter of budget. This was excellent for someone who didn't want to spend big money. The IR illuminated cameras were impressive. Their ability to see well in no light situations of a closed business were very satisfactory. Again you can get what your budget will allow but for a relatively low priced system this was impressive which is a good compliment coming from someone in the "professional" video surveillance business. I have discussed Lorex with other professionals and to my disappointment, the overall feeling is that they would never sell it because Lorex prices and packages systems for the beginner, end user type customers. Not that they are junk or substandard (which I don't find at all) but that they (the professional) can't make the profit that they would like to make on equipment sales. I have installed 4 different Lorex systems and have a 5th one on order for myself and believe that they meet or exceed the standards of so called "professional" systems barring the extreme special needs systems of some situations. (such as specialized cameras) Although I have read reviews that indicate poor tech support and response to problems, I have found on numerous occasions that this is not consistent with my experience. I have called several times on getting help to understand setup issues and found them to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful and professional, which has not always been my experience with "professional" equipment suppliers. I will admit that this is not necessarily the kind of system that I would recommend for the layman or kinds of people who are not "high tech" oriented or are computer illiterate. You will most likely struggle with and possibly fail in the setup, although I honestly think the people at tech service might even be able to pull you through it. I would recommend this system for many, but personally I have bought the LH328 model with higher resolution cameras and higher resolution recording capability for my personal use. It too has iPhone viewing capability which I really look forward to for my own use. All of the various Lorex models and packaging can be intimidating which makes it difficult for the newbie to pick the best system that fits his/her needs but with a little research even that can be made easier. I almost gave this 4 stars because higher resolution viewing and recording is somewhat lacking but then so is the higher price. Pay more and get more. It performed excellent for the price range system that it is.

I installed 7 of the 8 cameras. The installation was easy enough and the quality of the video is good. The night video is also very acceptable. This really seems to be a great value for the money

First and foremost I have had nothing but positive, constructive experiences with Lorex altogether. They communicate well with customers and have done everything they promised me they would. When I had issues with one camera, they were quick to replace it for me and very helpful in making the order.

The system itself is wonderful. The picture quality is very clear and it even zooms to a certain extent. It does everything that it says in the box and we are extremely happy with the product. Although we don't use it often, the iPhone all is a great feature and gives us peace of mind when away from home.

My brother had put a Lorex system at his house & he highly recommended Lorex. I had been researching security systems & when my brother showed me his system installed, I was convinced this system would work for me. He had installed it himself & explained how easy it was to do. I am a man with limited knowledge of electronics, after mounting the cameras, ran the cable to the dvr & it worked. I contacted Lorex tech support & the rest was done. It delivers a great picture on all cameras & I can watch it when I am away on business.
Easy to install & nothing to operate. Thx Lorex.
