This is my first camera security system. I purchased it for my home. I am starting off with, "We Love It." I have many reviews on different camera systems, and different manufacturers, and we decided to go with Lorex.
Now about the system. We went with the IP system because I did not want to have to supply power to each individual camera. The power is provided through the POE in the NVR. All you have to do is run one Cat5e cable from the camera to the NVR.
The cameras provide a fantastic picture quality during the day, and the LED's turn night into day (in grey scale format). The cameras were smaller than I expected thus providing a smaller footprint. Less than a pound! I have cameras pointed due west and no glare from the setting sun.
NVR: The NVR is big, real big. Larger than I expected. As in many other reviews this NVR does have a cooling fan that produces a whine much like a tower on a computer, so don't plan on putting the NVR in your bedroom. The software options and control in the NVR is incredible. You can fine tune the sensitivity of the cameras for "Motion Detection," it will send you emails whenever motion is detected along with a clear photo shot of why it activated! How cool is that? If moving trees or a flag is giving you false "Motion Detection" indication, you can go in and "tweak" the coverage with the software. Never have I seen anything like that. I just love the E-mail option! We travel a lot, so this is just perfect. The Flir Cloud works awesome with this system. They recommend 1Mbs upload, my provider only gets me 0.7 Mbs upload and it still works.
Now for the downside. It only comes with 60' Cat5e cables, I had to purchase some 100' cables to complete my installation. The HDMI cable from the NVR to your monitor is not a high quality! For this expensive of a system, I am sure they could provide a better and longer HDMI cable. The supplied cable is only about 21" long so your monitor would have to be sitting on top of your NVR. I upgraded my HDMI cable immediately. It comes with a mouse, but I purchased a wireless mouse and it worked great. Again don't plan on placing the NVR in a area you will be spending much time in, the sound of the cooling fan might drive you a little goofy. Chances are you are going to want to place your NVR in a location not easily accessible to the bad guys.
I had one camera fail within the first day, contacted customer support and they acted on it quickly arranging a replacement. Out of 16 cameras, that is NOT bad. There was NO wait on the telephone for support.
All in all, we are very happy with our first system. You cannot go wrong.
